Alison Lambert

I thought I would start with a blog on one of my favourite Artist's, so here it is:

Alison Lambert, born 1957, has regularly exhibited since 1995. Her large scale charcoal drawings create a massive impact on the viewer, as does her understanding of composition and her expert use of materials.

Left Prometheus, charcoal and pastel on paper 2005, below Gideon, charcoal and pastel on paper 2002.

So how does she use her materials? Working on extremely thick watercolour paper allows the artist to create a sequence of ripping into the paper, mark making, ripping, mark making and so on. The energy she generates within this fast and physical process completely transfers into the aesthetics of her work, hitting the viewer at full impact. The outcome is an expertly crafted, totally absorbing and individual body of work: not without it's influences, there is a clear similarity to the work of Francis Bacon in terms of energetic mark making and the focus on facial expression. The images are sometimes disturbing, sometimes contemplative, but all have, embedded somewhere within them, a powerful story to share.
